The independence of Biarfa state from Nigeria was declared in 1967. In 1970, after severe fighting, the Republic of Biafra was again reintegrated into Nigeria as three states - East Central, Rivers, South Eastern. 1 pound equalled 20 shillings, 1 shilling equalled 12 pence.
