In 1921, when the Irish Free State was established, 6 counties in the north-east of the island chose to remain a part of the UK. They use a limited authority of self-governing. Several commercial joint-stock banks issue the banknotes for circulation in Northern Ireland only; these banknotes are equal to the UK pounds. 1 pound equals 100 pence.
