Before Latvia was forced to join the Soviet Union, it's legal tender was lat. In 1991, after the split of the USSR, Latvia was among the first republics to refuse from the soviet rouble. They introduced transitional money, called rublis, and in two years lat was restored as the legal tender. 1 lat equals 100 cents.
