Before Malta was conquered by the british in 1815, it used spanish and italian coins. In the middle of the XIX century the british currency system was introduced in Malta. In 1949 the maltese pound was introduced to replace the british currency units. Beginning with 1971 the maltese pound is divided into 100 cents and 1000 mils. In 1983 the maltese pound was renamed into the maltese lire.
