Before 1920 there were 8 emission banks in South Africa. In 1922 the south african pound was introduced, it equalled 20
shillings and 240 pence. In 1961 decimal currency system was introduced, and the south african rand was introduced. In
1994-1996 new beautiful banknote issue took place. After the political changes, the banknotes were redesigned in 2005.
1 rand equals 100 cents.
