Before the establishment of Somalian Democratic Republic, the indian rupee used to be legal tender of Somalia. The rupee was replaced by the east african schilling and the italian lire (the lire was withdrawn in 1944), and the schilling was replaced by somalo in 1950. The somalian schilling was born in 1960 (instead of somalo), and it equals 100 cents. In 1994 the Somaliland Republic (former part of Somalia) proclaimed itself and introduced the banknotes in Somaliland shillings.
